Introduction
This part of the book was written by Sandy Gallagher, Bob Proctor’s business partner who is also the co-founder of the Proctor Gallagher Institute. Sandy explains how her life was transformed back in 2006 when she attended one of Bob Proctor’s seminars. From that moment, her life began to move in a different direction, full of purpose.
One of the most eye-catching comments Sandy made was the realization that she was an extra in her own movie. Sandy was already a successful banking attorney earning in the upper six figures and handled billions of dollars in mergers and acquisitions but she came to the realization that someone else was always the star. She was always trying to please other people while trying to measure up to what she thought their standard was.
That weekend at the seminar, Sandy permitted herself to dream, feel good, and get excited about her new future. She set out a new intention to be part of Bob Proctor’s inner circle. Today she is the CEO of the Proctor Gallagher Institute, which operates in 89 countries.
Sandy’s story is just one example of many people who have been able to change their lives for the better by following Bob Proctor’s teachings. It is Sandy’s belief that we all have within us the ability to create our own destiny. We just need to learn how to tap into that greatness.
The first step in doing so is understanding our relationship with money.
Chapter 1: Me and Money
In this chapter, Bob Proctor tells the story of 8 of the world’s wealthiest financiers back in the early 1900s who you would think had found the secret of earning money. However, 25 years later, all of these men were broke, which might prompt you to think that money is bad because rich people are not happy. But there are also wealthy people who are very happy and have continued to accumulate more wealth.
For this reason, it’s important to ask ourselves what our beliefs are and how we feel about money. This is just one example of where our paradigms are evident. Much of our conditioning with respect to money goes back to a very early age. Bob Proctor refers to this conditioning as Paradigms which are a multitude of beliefs and habits. A habit is an idea that is fixed in a person’s subconscious mind that causes them to do something without any conscious thought. A paradigm is what causes our habitual behavior.
Many times most people do things they do not want to do, get results they do not want but do it anyway. This is because of the paradigm in our subconscious mind that is controlling our actions or behavior.
Now let me ask you, how comfortable are you with money? People don’t feel comfortable with money because they have it – they have it because they feel comfortable with it.
Bob Proctor wants you to start thinking that money is important and a servant, you are the master, and when it circulates is put to good use. These ideas can be implemented in your own life with money affirmations to start developing a prosperity consciousness.
You can start practicing today and start carrying a few hundred dollars with you all the time. Don’t spend it, just carry it, take it out, look at it, and count it so you can start getting used to it. You might think this is silly or wrong, but it isn’t. The more comfortable you are with it, the more you will attract to yourself.
Also, Bob Proctor reminds us to never worry or fear whether or not we will get the money we desire while referring to a biblical phrase of great value; “Behold, the thing I fear has come to visit upon me”.
Bob Proctor also mentions in this part of the book that as we gain more conscious awareness of the talents and abilities that lie deep within us, it is important not to rush through it so you can properly digest the great value of the information presented. Repetition is the father of learning; understanding and applying these concepts is our objective. Memorization will not bring the success we seek.
Prosperity Consciousness
This is my favorite part of the “Money and Me” chapter. Bob Proctor says, “we are floating in an ocean of thought-energy, where all the knowledge there ever was or ever will be, is already present. We are also surrounded by abundance”. I love these principles and could talk for hours about this subject. It personally changed the way I was thinking and, as a result, the direction of my life. Most of us live our life by default, we get up, go to work, come back home, party a little, then go back to sleep and do it again the next day. When you live life this way, you are not very conscious of the abundance that surrounds you or how to prosper in life.
Bob Proctor explains that “Consciousness is, and always has been, developed through thinking, and regardless of what your present situation in life maybe, if you ever hope to improve it and truly become wealthy—as this book suggests you can—you must begin thinking of prosperity in your mind, now” (pg.16). We are spiritual beings, gifted with an intellect, living in a physical body.
Everything that you see in this world got created twice, first in your mind as a thought and second in the material world. The planes you see when looking up in the sky, the car you drive when you head to work, and the chair you are sitting on right now. Prosperity consciousness is developed through thinking which is the highest function a human being is capable of.
This was the first book that Bob Proctor wrote, and it is his sincere hope that it will lead you to a surprising discovery of what lies within you by the repetition of these prosperity ideas.
Prosperity consciousness has no shortage or limit. With respect to your earning potential, resolve today to totally remove the lid from your wonderful mind and comprehend that the money you’re seeking is —and always has been— seeking you in return. You might be familiar with Napoleon Hill’s quote, “What the mind of man can achieve and believe, it can achieve”.
We need to be very careful of the thoughts we choose, “money is good”, “I love people and use money”, and “money is my servant and I am the Master”. The subconscious mind does not know the difference between what is real and what is imagined. If we develop the habit of thinking thoughts of abundance and prosperity, we will begin to develop a prosperity consciousness.
Visualize a great life of wealth and abundance and feel yourself already in possession of it. Mentally and physically play with money until you are comfortable with it. And, remember, when we hear negative thoughts from others, WE have the power in our conscious mind to reject those thoughts, and only allow thoughts of abundance to enter our subconscious mind.
Chapter 2: How Much is Enough?
“Most people think they want more money than they really do, and they settle for a lot less than they could get”, this is one of my favorite quotes by Earl Nightingale. This chapter starts getting us to think about how we WANT to live life but first, we must decide how much money we want. It is not good enough to say “lots of money” or “more money”. You should have the money you need, to provide the things you want, to live the way you choose to live.
Remember, when we are reprogramming our paradigms, we are working with our subconscious mind, which doesn’t think it only accepts. As a result, we must be extremely explicit about the items and activities we wish to spend our money on during the next year. Like Bob Proctor says on page 30, “Remember, you do not have a contract to live forever, nor is this a practice run – this is your life and you should be enjoying it to the fullest extent humanly possible!”.
Related: How to Change Your Subconscious Mind for Success
To help you get started, simply create a list of all of your monthly expenses such as food, rent, mortgage, utilities, clothes, credit cards, car, and insurance payments. Now create a list of things you want and activities you want to experience, such as cars you would like to drive, places you want to go, restaurants you want to dine in, and so on. These are just some of the many possibilities, so keep working on your list until complete.
Then, this part is important, after visualizing how you want to live, include the amount of each item and add them all up.
Practice visualizing the life you desire. You may find your mind trying to play tricks on you; you could be thinking, “This is really crazy … I’m never going to have the money to live the way this book suggests.” These are your PARADIGMS talking … that old conditioning, the multitude of habits in your subconscious mind. Your paradigms literally control your thinking.
What kind of life are you DREAMING of? There are many people, who do have enough money to live the life they dream of; they weren’t born with it, and no one left it to them. They were “Born Rich” in the sense of having the God-given potential to succeed, (everyone is), but like most people, they might be short of money.
In the book, Bob Proctor speaks of a tape on “Attitude” that he listened to from Earl Nightingale, and if you have heard Bob speak in person, you have probably heard him recite this part of the tape. He usually lowers his voice and quotes Earl, “Now, right here we come to a rather strange fact. We tend to minimize the things we can do, the goals we can reach, and yet, for some equally strange reason, we think others can do things that we cannot. I want you to know that this is not true. You do have deep reservoirs of talent and ability within you and you can have the things you want.“
Bob Proctor listened to Earl Nightingale speak these words hundreds of times but really did not understand the point Earl was trying to make. Then, one day, it “clicked”. Bob finally understood – if they could do it, so could he, but only if he was willing to pay the price. You can do it as well, but you must be willing to pay the price, and that price is determining exactly HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH.
An important lesson to take away from this is the fact that Bob Proctor had listened to Nightingale’s quote hundreds of times before he understood it. REPETITION is the key to success and the first law of learning, especially when it comes to changing paradigms. And the same way Bob listened to Earl’s material, I have been doing the same for the past years and will continue to do so because repetition is the father of learning, and that is how our brain creates new neural connections necessary for us to increase our awareness.
Thanks to neuroplasticity, our negative thoughts can be replaced over time. Neuroplasticity is the ability of our brains to change and adapt in response to our environment and experiences. This means that we can rewire our brains by focusing on positive thoughts, rather than on fear or negative thoughts, which are triggered by our amygdala.
By now, you should have completed your list and arrived at a figure; so take pen to paper and write that number down in big bold figures.
So, when do you start living this good life? The answer is now by start paying yourself first. People who have money learn that they must “pay themselves first”. This is better known as the Babylonian law of financial success.
Remember, part of all you earn is yours to keep. Bob Proctor uses an example in the book – that whatever you earn on Monday morning, or 10% of your income, is yours to keep and should go directly into a special account that you do not have easy access to. Bob Proctor calls this your “Financial Independence Account”.
